Nuffield Health’s Fitness & Wellbeing centre in St Albans, Hertfordshire underwent a flat roof replacement & overlay by Weatherproofing Advisors after the existing single ply membrane was identified to be end-of-life.
As the centre remained operational throughout, planning around staff and customers was essential to minimise disruption while restoring or replacing areas suffering water ingress. A secure access scaffolding system was erected following a thorough core sample assessment of the single ply roof.
Replacement works on the roofing included a Protan-specified insulation and single ply installation, completely replacing the original single ply. The felt roof was refurbished via overlay. This project resolved the water ingress issues and delivered safe roof access for all future maintenance.
Weatherproofing Advisors were successfully appointed to refurbish the flat roofs on this Fitness and Wellbeing centre.
The two existing flat roofs were comprosed of mineral felt and single ply membrane, with M&E plant equipment installed on the roof.
The single ply membrane was visibly at the end of its serviceable life, extremely brittle and beyond repair with widespread water ingress affecting the building.
A specification was provided by Weatherproofing Advisors, in conjunction with one of their single ply supply chain partners, the proposal was to overlay the existing felt roof and to strip and replace the existing single ply roof, incorporating new insulation to current building regulations.
Due diligence was completed by Weatherproofing Advisors, with core samples which confirmed that the single ply in the roof was saturated, and that the felt roof was suitable for overlay. A validation survey was also conducted to detemine the condition of all M&E equipment.
The building was to remain live for the duration of the project and roofing works were carefully planned to minimise disruption.
Scaffolding was erected by WPA for safe access. Plant equipment was isolated as needed, and wall mounted where possible for future maintenance. Roof lanterns were deemed redundant and were removed/capped off.
The new roofs were successfully delivered with a 25-year single point warranty, with new safety handrails installed to allow safe access for all future maintenance.
